Filament for the Bambu Lab AMS

The Bambu Lab AMS (Automatic Material System) feeds up to four filaments into the printer and switches between them on its own. The filament doesn’t have to be Bambu Lab’s: other brands work too, as long as the spool and the material are right.

Below are the filaments whose standard spool goes into the AMS and AMS 2 Pro as it is. We ship them from Senec, Slovakia, usually within 1–2 working days, with free shipping to Slovakia, Czechia and Hungary from a single spool, on orders over €19.

What the AMS needs

A spool 197–202 mm across and 50–68 mm wide
That’s what the AMS, AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT take. Size decides, not weight: some 1 kg spools are wider than 68 mm and don’t fit, while some 0.5 kg spools have the full diameter and do. So each product says which spool goes into the AMS. 2 kg spools are too big. The filament has to be 1.75 mm.
A rigid material
PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PC, PA and other rigid materials work. Regular TPU and TPE are too soft to feed through the AMS; print them from an external holder. The exception is Bambu Lab’s TPU for AMS, which feeds from every AMS unit.
Preferably a plastic spool
A cardboard spool can slip on the AMS rollers and leave debris in the unit. Bambu Lab recommends plastic spools and, for a cardboard one, an adapter ring.
Dry filament
Damp filament snaps and strings. Dry PA and PC before printing. PVA and BVOH go into the AMS only when dry. The AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT can dry filament in the unit; the original AMS only keeps it dry with desiccant packs.
No carbon or glass fibre from other brands
Bambu Lab doesn’t support other brands’ carbon or glass fibre filaments in the AMS: they wear the feed path and break easily. Print them from an external holder (on the AMS HT, through its bypass port) with a hardened nozzle.

Spool sizes by brand

Spools of the brands we sell that go into the AMS, AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT. Other weights of the same brand may not fit; the product page shows it for the spool you choose.

Questions

Does filament from brands other than Bambu Lab work in the AMS?

Yes. What matters to the AMS is the spool and the material, not the brand. In Bambu Studio, pick the profile for the material, such as Generic PETG.

Does a 2 kg spool fit in the AMS?

No, it’s larger across than the AMS takes. A smaller spool of the same filament usually fits. Each product page shows compatibility for the weight you select.

Can I put a cardboard spool in the AMS?

It works, but cardboard can slip and leave debris. Bambu Lab recommends plastic spools, or an adapter ring on a cardboard one.

Can I print TPU through the AMS?

Not regular TPU, it’s too soft. Print it from an external spool holder. The exception is Bambu Lab’s TPU for AMS, which feeds from every AMS unit.

Do I need to dry filament before loading it into the AMS?

PLA and PETG from a new sealed spool usually not. PA, PC, PVA and BVOH yes, they absorb moisture quickly. The AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT can dry them in the unit.

Does this apply to the AMS lite on the Bambu Lab A1?

Not entirely. The AMS lite holds the spool by its centre hole (53–58 mm) and takes widths of 40–68 mm, but fewer materials: PLA, PETG, dry PVA and TPU for AMS yes, ABS, ASA and PC no. Our labels are for the AMS, AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT.
