Volcano PLA | FormFutura
Volcano PLA is an industrial-grade PLA filament designed for professional applications that require high printing speeds and improved heat resistance and mechanical properties similar to ABS. It offers the same mechanical and thermal properties as most ABS filaments after annealing, but with the added benefits of biodegradability and ease of printing associated with PLA.

How to store filaments
Humidity and UV light can decrease the filament quality and weaken its mechanical properties. We strongly recommend storing open filaments in a dry and dark place. You can find a complete guide on how to properly store your filament here
Where to throw print fails and supports?
We kindly ask our customers to cope with plastic waste responsibly. Failed prints, support material, rafts, or brims should be liquidated according to the local guidelines. Paradoxically, in most cases, it is better to throw this waste in the regular trash can, as most of the material waste created in 3D printing is not identified, which causes more problems than benefits in the waste sorting facilities.
Volcano PLA has a high heat resistance of 95° C or higher after annealing, less than 0.3% shrinkage after annealing (about 8 times less shrinkage than competitor materials), excellent dimensional accuracy before and after annealing, and is engineered for high printing speeds of more than 120 mm/s. It is also highly crystalline immediately after extrusion, resulting in increased stiffness and temperature resistance, and has superb mechanical properties comparable to ABS. In addition, Volcano PLA has excellent interlayer adhesion and a matte surface finish.
Annealing Volcano PLA
Annealing is a secondary process in which a plastic part is heated up to half of the melt temperature for a moderate period of time before letting the plastic part cool back down to room temperature. When the plastic part is reheated (annealed) like this, the material relaxes and internal stresses and/or strains are relieved resulting in improved dimensional stability, reduction/removal of dimensional distortion and defects, and improved physical and thermal properties of the printed (and annealed) plastic object.
Step 1
Preheat a convection oven at 110° C (half the melting temperature of Volcano PLA). It is highly recommended to use a thermometer to calibrate the exact temperature of your convection oven.
Preheating the oven to 110° C is extremely important as your Volcano PLA printed object will then crystalize in such a rapid timeframe that there is almost no time for the material to shrink. This results in a negligible shrinkage percentage of < 0.3% and by that Volcano PLA is unsurpassed when it comes to reduction of shrinkage after annealing.
Step 2
When the oven is preheated to a stable temperature of 110° C then quickly put your Volcano PLA printed object in the oven. Make sure to do this as quick as possible in order to keep the loss of heat reduced to a minimum. Don’t remove any supports (if used) from the printed object when putting it in the oven.
It is recommended to place the Volcano PLA printed object on a flat aluminium sheet/foil or similar flat metal object to obtain a stable/equal heat transmission.
Small objects – 20 minutes timer
For small objects with thin walls and medium infill annealing will take ± 20 minutes
Large objects – 60 minutes timer
For large objects with thick walls and medium/high infill annealing take ± 60 minutes
Step 3
When the object is annealed taking above mentioned duration into account then switch off the oven and let it cool down to room temperature. Do not remove the object before the oven has completely cooled down to room temperature!
Step 4
When the oven is cooled down completely you remove the object from the oven and remove any support material (if used). Your Volcano PLA printed object is now annealed and has all thermal and mechanical properties as displayed in the Technical Data Sheet (TDS).

General information about PLA :
PLA is a great material with awesome printability, it is great for novice printers and perfectly works with any printer. Depending on the brand and the type, it mostly differs in mechanical and thermal resistance, and as you may think color. 3D PLA filaments are the most widely printed because of their ease to use and so the producer did want to catch a market share by offering colors beyond the rainbow's colors. PLA was until recently a weak filament with only 50°C heat resistance and very poor mechanical properties. The demand for PLA made producers overengineer the material and some firms managed to put seriously increase this once hobby-only material.
Differences in PLA price usually mean better color consistency, lower in-filament humidity rate, better diameter tolerance, higher thermal resistance (see Volcano PLA from FormFutura), and better stiffness (up to 9x like PolyMax from PolyMaker).
Printability of PLA filament
PLA is the easiest to print material. It is very forgiving and usually, most slicer predefined settings will work well. PLA doesn't warp, has great overhang capabilities, and has a great interlayer adhesion. Most of the time, PLA doesn't even require an adhesive to stick to the hotbed.
PLA mechanical and thermal properties
Regular basic PLA is stiff and not very tough meaning that it can break easily. Its main disadvantage is that it starts softening at 50°C. It is mostly suited for visual prototypes and non-functional models. Because of its ease of print, most brands have modified and pushed the PLA boundaries further making some PLAs suitable for functional prototypes.
Tips and other notable benefits
PLA is so-called "eco-friendly" and is widely used for compostable cutlery. "So-called" because its compatibility is not what you would expect from this word.

Who is FormFutura for?
FormFutura suits makers who want one supplier for both standard and technical work: designers who need a special look (metal-filled or textured PLA), engineers printing outdoor parts in ASA or polypropylene, and anyone printing complex shapes with soluble supports. Resin users will find general-purpose and engineering resins from the same brand.
Frequently asked questions
Which FormFutura support material should I choose?
Match the support to your main filament: AquaSolve is made for PLA, Atlas Support for PETG and Helios Support for ABS and ASA. PVA-type supports absorb moisture quickly, so store the spool dry and dry it before printing if it has been open for a while.
Do I need a special nozzle for MetalFil?
Yes. According to FormFutura, MetalFil should be printed with a hardened nozzle of 0.4 mm or larger, with retraction enabled. It works with full-metal, PEEK and PTFE hotends and with both direct drive and Bowden extruders.
Where are the FormFutura resins?
The Platinum LCD and Engineering SLA Series resins are in our resin section, not among the filaments.
