PPS AM230™ | Spectrum
Spectrum PPS AM230™ is a highly specialized, high-temperature filament from Spectrum Filaments that opens up new dimensions in the 3D printing world. This remarkable material is based on an engineering polymer, Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS), known for its extraordinary mechanical properties. Unyielding even under continuous loading at temperatures above 125°C, Spectrum PPS AM230™ exhibits unchanged rigidity, strength, and creep resistance. Furthermore, it has a high softening point, or VICAT, reaching up to 236°C.

How to store filaments
Humidity and UV light can decrease the filament quality and weaken its mechanical properties. We strongly recommend storing open filaments in a dry and dark place. You can find a complete guide on how to properly store your filament here
Where to throw print fails and supports?
We kindly ask our customers to cope with plastic waste responsibly. Failed prints, support material, rafts, or brims should be liquidated according to the local guidelines. Paradoxically, in most cases, it is better to throw this waste in the regular trash can, as most of the material waste created in 3D printing is not identified, which causes more problems than benefits in the waste sorting facilities.

One of the most impressive attributes of Spectrum PPS AM230™ is its remarkable chemical resistance. This filament is virtually insoluble in any known solvent, even potent acids and bases. This inherent resistance coupled with its non-flammability, even without the use of flame-retardant additives, makes Spectrum PPS AM230™ a perfect choice for demanding applications.
Please note that the thermal properties for this filament were calculated using an injection moulded sample.
General information about PPS :
Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) is a top-tier, high-performance thermoplastic material, specially engineered for rigorous applications and possessing a stellar portfolio of thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. PPS is an emblem of durability and resilience, boasting insolubility in any known solvent under 200°C. It is a go-to choice for high-demand sectors including automotive, chemical processing, oil & gas, and electronics. It's inherent flame resistance and self-extinguishing qualities further elevate PPS's standing as an optimal choice for electrical/electronics applications.
Key Attributes
- Melting Temperature (Tm) of 285°C
- Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) of 85°C
- Superior chemical resistance - insoluble in any solvent under 200°C
- Intrinsic flame resistance (UL94-V0)
- Long-term hydrolytic stability - extremely low moisture absorption
- Outstanding strength and modulus, maintaining performance even at high temperatures
- Consistent dielectric constant and dissipation factor across various temperatures and frequencies
Printability of PPS
The stability of the chamber temperature is critical to prevent irregularities and maintain layer adhesion. Given the PPS temperature ranges from 315 to 345°C, an extruder capable of reaching these levels is mandatory. For successful printing, a specific adhesive, like Nano Polymer Adhesive, is required to be applied to the bed, and a three-layer application is recommended for optimal first-layer adherence. An actively heated and enclosed chamber with a temperature of at least 60°C is also necessary. After printing, PPS material shrinks as the chamber cools down and can potentially damage the bed due to its strength; it is important to remove the printout as quickly as possible. PPS filament is extremely susceptible to moisture and can readily absorb water, affecting the final print's strength. Therefore, it is essential to dry the material, preferably at 120°C before every use.
Extruder Temp: 315 - 345°C (requires all-metal extruder)
Bed Temp: 120 - 160°C
Chamber Temp: 60 - 90°C
Annealing of PPS
To optimize the crystallinity in the resin and bolster mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties, it's crucial to anneal PPS parts post-printing. Typically, full annealing demands 2-4 hours of heating at 130°C.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Verify Your Spool report?
It is Spectrum's own quality system: each spool has an individual report with its quality data, so you can check the batch you received.
Which Spectrum filament should I start with?
Start with PLA (MATT or SILK for a nicer surface) or PETG Premium for tougher parts. For outdoor use, ASA 275 is the usual next step.
Do Spectrum composites need a hardened nozzle?
Yes. Carbon, glass fibre and Kevlar filled materials are abrasive, so use a hardened steel nozzle with them.
