+421 915 509 416support@justcreate3d.comSupport filaments are printed under overhangs and inside cavities and removed after printing, so the model keeps clean surfaces. You need them mainly on dual-extrusion or multi-material printers, where the support is printed from a second spool. There are three families: water-soluble PVA, HIPS that dissolves in limonene, and breakaway supports removed by hand. All of them ship from our warehouse in Senec, Slovakia.
Types of support material
- PVA (water-soluble) – dissolves in tap water. Versions for PLA (AquaSolve, PolyDissolve™ S1), PETG (Atlas Support) and ABS/ASA (Helios Support). Very hygroscopic, must be kept dry.
- HIPS – the classic support for ABS; it dissolves in limonene. It is also a lightweight, impact-resistant material in its own right. We stock HIPS from Devil Design and Fillamentum (HIPS Extrafill): nozzle about 235–240 °C, bed 95–100 °C, enclosure recommended.
- Breakaway – PolySupport™ by Polymaker for Polymaker PLA; it is snapped off by hand, no solvent needed.
How to choose
- Match the temperature – the support must print in a temperature range close to the model material.
- Check compatibility – the support has to bond to the model enough to hold it, but still separate cleanly. Manufacturers publish compatibility tables, e.g. Polymaker for PolyDissolve™ S1 and PolySupport™.
- Consider removal – water for PVA, limonene for HIPS, hands for breakaway.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a support filament on a single-extruder printer?
Usually not. A single-extruder printer prints supports from the model material itself. Soluble and breakaway supports make sense when the printer can switch between two materials.
Which support should I use for PETG?
Atlas Support from FormFutura is a PVA designed for PETG-based materials. For ABS and ASA choose Helios Support or HIPS.
How do I store support filaments?
PVA in particular absorbs moisture very quickly. Keep it sealed with desiccant and dry it before printing, otherwise it bubbles and clogs the nozzle.
